Installation, Title: Domestic Wars
Installation consisting of projections taken from six different videos of my own domestic space, Kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms and living room. The Videos are edited together, looped and then projected in a dark gallery space. There is a television set in front of the projections that is playing news appropriated images. ( BBC, RT, CNN) the appropriated images are of tragedy and depict riots, protest, police brutality and war, all sourced from Google and looped on a DVD. There is a red chair in which the viewer can sit and submerse themselves in both videos.
“Domestic Wars” grows from a deep seated fascination with new media art and its use of appropriation. The work produced questions the ideas of appropriation and our except preconceptions of news footage, against our own real life view. Domestic Wars has exaggerated and subverted accepted notions about both culture and the technology of television, while immersing viewers in a real/non real domestic space. Exposing something deeply irrational at its centre. I look to create and evoke de-synchronised views and disembodiment within the viewers conscious. The viewer can relate to both images but at the same time they are ambiguously differentiated in context and studium. The television set and red chair have both been transcended into sculptural artefacts in which we associated the viewing of news with. Done through the use of a gallery.
New media art has taken a casual attitude to the means of appropriation. This is due to amount of work that has no ownership or copyright. This in turn has created a complacent relationship to power and capitol. Noting significant milestones has become a chore in which our work must grow from. This is key to my own video art and is a theme that will carry through my entire practise.

Domestic show reel.
Domestic views. these are to be projected behind a tv screen in my installation. viewer is to sit in a chair will viewing both pieces as one. shown in an early photo. a couple of post's back.
Using my own house creates a very overtly objective subversity to the rest of the world. its my opinion. this is the way i live as does the rest of the world. the reason for choosing empty rooms was to create ambiguity and a shared link in the viewers conscious , so they can connect on a visual level to what they are seeing. "home" we all have a home do we not.

Joseph Hale, Domestic wars, 2011, digital video and stills appropriation
Video will be posted tomorrow. had great problem orientating the projector and the T.V. screen, so that everything worked next to each other. No shadows covering screen unless you walk past the T.V. Seat for viewer which i later realized people didn't initialy sit in. This gave the TV and chair its own sculptural value and feel. eventually someone sat in the chair which made me very happy. The subverted synchronicity works well. The feel of being in a room that isn't really there watching a T.V. program that doesn't really exist. I felt like putting a small statue of Buddha underneath the tv so that there was a reference to nam june paik due to me breaking part of the T.V. when taking it to the gallery. i am interested if anyone would make the comparison when viewing due to the stand being split in half. (paiks broken T.V. on the way to the gallery it got damaged and the video only played on a small band half way through the middle of the screen
Problem solving is key to this work as you never expect to be able to visualise you're finished piece until you actually start putting the thing up.

Jazz Hands
Experimentation with music and photo transitions. this is an example of what would be completely ilegal to show in a gallery. if anyone recognizes this work, then i would like their feed back and what they think of my appropriation of their images. The thing with these images are that they don't have copyright on them to start with so, can i get away with it?
